More than half of Finnish university students use Sisu SIS

Did you know that Sisu is one of the rare success stories in public IT projects and that more than half of university students in Finland use the Sisu student information system? Read more!

More than half of Finnish university students use the Sisu Student Information System to plan and manage their studies. It is a public IT solution that has been adopted on an exceptionally large scale.

A rare success in public IT development

Long-term, large-scale successes are rare in public IT projects. The Sisu Student Information System is one such success.

Sisu is a modern Student Information System developed by Funidata that supports the entire student lifecycle, from the beginning of studies through to graduation and lifelong learning. The system is developed in collaboration with higher education institutions. Long-term collaboration and shared ownership have ensured that the system has evolved beyond a single project into a widely adopted solution across the Finnish university sector.

Widely used in Finnish universities

Sisu is used by six of Finland’s largest universities: Aalto University, the University of Helsinki, the University of Jyväskylä, Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Hanken School of Economics, and Tampere University.

Over 100,000 students actively use Sisu each week. This accounts for well over half of all students enrolled in degree programmes at these universities, which totalled 176,175 in 2025. According to the Finnish Education statistics service, the number of university students using Sisu was 104,976 in 2025. (Vipunen.fi)

Sisu is also in used by universities of applied sciences, including Arcada University of Applied Sciences, Åland University of Applied Sciences (Högskolan på Åland), and LAB University of Applied Sciences.

A shared system provides comparable data

The widespread use of the system offers a unique view of higher education in Finland. A shared Student Information System harmonises study administration practices and improves data quality. For students, this translates to clearer study planning and smoother registration processes.

For higher education institutions, Sisu provides up-to-date insights into study progress, workload, and bottlenecks. This information can be used to support teaching planning and resource allocating.

Development continues in close collaboration

Sisu is continuously developed in collaboration with user institutions and students. Product development emphasises the use of artificial intelligence, particularly in analytics, while maintaining a strong focus on usability, accessibility and data quality.

Funidata’s goal is to ensure that Finnish higher education institutions have access to solutions that support the needs of a changing operating environment, both now and in the future.
